"HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US AT MIORTUK KENNEL!"
Picture
As we prepare to welcome in 2011, it is also time to reflect on the happenings of 2010.There were a lot of changes that took place here in the out going year.
First: The sad loss of three members of our family, Aurora, Apache & Riglis. They are gone but are certainly not forgotten. We enjoyed many miles & adventures together.
Second: The change that is taking place here at our kennel as we change the venue from Distance Mushing to Sprint Racing. To make room for the conversion Steven Pluigers adopted Clyde, Star, Nancy, Charlie, Polaris, Mickey and Butch. He is a new musher that has come a long way in a very short time and has handled all the adjustments presented to him & passed with flying colors. Yesterday, he emailed me regarding his first run with a sled. It sounded very exciting.Come next week, Carl Routhier will be coming to pick up Stormy, Sky, Lynus, Thunder & Lightning to start his adventures with sled dogs. Carl will also learn the highs & lows of starting a new life adventure with mushing. I feel with time, he will be as successful as Steven.
Third: This year there was also some new additions to the Miortuk Team with Goliate, Cosmos, Max, Teal, Cobalt, Indigo & Blue.
Fourth: There was great progress made by the young dogs: Lizzy, Annie, Katie, Sophie, Vicky, Nicky & Willy. These dogs are all preforming well and will be part of this years racing team to give them experience for next season.
Fifth: I would also like to thank my many neighbors that are showing me support in a disagreement with one neighbor that is trying to cause problems for my canine family & me.
We are looking foreword to 2011 with all the changes that has taken place and to see all these efforts come together along with addition of the two puppies Indigo & Blue. It should be a very exciting year.
Since the last posting, training has continued, only now with the new racing sled. It didn't take long to get used too the new sled & how it handles. We also hooked up the 12 dog racing team for the first time (together & with the new sled). It was a very exciting ride enjoying speeds that I have never experienced before.
Due to lack of snow & hard/fast trail conditions, we made a change to our training using two teams of 8 dogs, for the safety of the dogs. This was not what we would like, however the trail conditions dictated the change. We are also running the teams 10 miles an outing.
We have one more week to prepare for our first race of the season and the weather is not cooperating with the training. Last night, we received freezing rain, today rain & tomorrow rain. Next week, we are forecasted to receive some fresh snow.
So, again from all of us at Miortuk Kennel. We wish you a happy & wonderful 2011 from "The Northern Forest".
Until next week........

" SEASONS GREETINGS FROM THE NORTHERN FOREST!"
Picture
“A MUSHERS WINTER SONG!”

                        The weather outside is frightful.

But, the dogs’ gathering around is delightful.

As I stand with harnesses in hand.

                        The dogs quickly understand.

It is time to hook up the sled and go.

So, Let it Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!

                       MERRY CHRISTMAS

AND

 HAPPY NEW YEAR

"TRAINING CONTINUES IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"
Picture
Now is the time, we start to look at what dogs will be making our Open Class Sprint Team. This is a difficult time, when we have to make decisions on performance only and the teams best prospects to meet our racing objectives. This means looking objectively at the dogs and deciding which dogs are most capable to perform at the levels we will be competing in. This very difficult as we have to be objective and keep favoritism out of the equation. We have some incredible dogs that will not make this years team due to the increase of speed being experienced. The dogs that wont make this years racing team were bred for mid/long distance racing and have served me well in those ventures. I still enjoy running these dogs and will continue to have the pleasure of running them. It is totally unfair to place them in race conditions they were not bred for. That being said, I am entering in as of yet uncharted waters for me as this years sprint team is, for me, incredibly fast. It is truly interesting and fun working to form this years team and Max is the final link required to aid us in moving to the next level of performance.
Now to piece of sad news. Mr. Lapointe passed away a few days ago. He was most influential on mushers here in Quebec and Ontario in the field of nutrition for sled dogs. One of his favorite quote was " Dogs cant perform when their gas tank is empty!" Mr. Lapointe was a self made student/expert on dog nutrition. The most interesting fact is that he wasn't a musher. Many of us mushers learned how to feed dogs after talking to Mr. Lapointe.
THANK YOU MR. LAPOINTE!
Until next week......

" FINALLY A FULL WEEK OF TRAINING IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"
Picture
Finally the weather cooperated give us four days of training two teams/day. Last Sunday, we finally got some snow allowing us to commence training on Monday.
Due to the long layoff, we started the week with 4.5 mile runs and finished the week with 8 mile runs. The dogs are performing great and are enjoying the longer runs. The photo shows the newest addition to the Miortuk Team Max, pictured here with Cosmos, after his first run with us. Max is an experienced Unlimited Class Race Leader and will add some more speed at the front end as well as experience for overtaking & head-on passing. Max is from the kennel of Rosaire Perron. His first run here was truly impressive.
Thank you Rosaire for your continued support.
Until next week.....

" WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE WEATHER IN THE NORTHERN FOREST? "
Picture
For a second week, we have had bad conditions for training. We got in two great days of training on Monday & Tuesday and then the rain returned on Wednesday. On Wednesday evening the temperatures dropped below freezing and all the snow that washed away with the rain turned to ice! So the end result all training was suspended pending on snow. We finally received 2" of dry snow on Saturday and another 2" of dry snow on Sunday morning. The only problem with this type of snow, it doesn't stick to the ice. Although it will be possible to resume training on Monday, caution will need to be made when running the dogs.
The photo shows the athleticism & enthusiasm of the dogs while they are running. Here you can see both Cosmos & Coyute driving through a turn at the half way loop! All the dogs are doing great and earlier in the week we increased the length of the runs to 8 miles with only three 1 minutes rest periods. The dogs enjoyed going on a new trail! However, due the lay off, we will have to return to a couple of shorter runs before increasing the miles back to 8 miles.
Sunday, we had a couple of visitors here to learn about Sled Dogs and the mushing life. They came here because of the Mentoring Program set up through the Sled Dog Central web site. We had a great visit and I believe we will have a couple new mushers in the future. Thank you Eve & Mathew for your interest in the mushing life and taking the opportunity to learn more about it.
I was informed that I am the only musher listed in the Mentoring Program for the Quebec. So, I would like to challenge other mushers in Quebec to volunteer as mentors.
WE ALL NEED TO GIVE BACK  FOR THE LIFESTYLE WE ENJOY!!!!
Until next week.......
