This is the time of year were we play with the dogs and try them up at Lead. This was the first time Lilly got a real opportunity to run Lead for over two miles. She did fantastic! Lilly has a real outgoing personality and strong desire to be independent. She is a natural leader in the kennel and now proving the same in a team. She was not fazed at all at being at Lead in a 13, Dog Team. She is A Natural Leader! Lilly in the kennel, receiving pets, getting harnessed (also un-harnessed) and running is alway very animated and enthusiastic. She will be fun to see develop next season! On Sunday, both Suzanne and Michele said farewell to Miortuk Kennel and were off to continue their adventures here in Quebec with a visit to Montreal and Quebec City before departing to home. On Thursday, we had a visit to a Cabine A Sucre for our annual celebration of the arrival of Spring and Miortuk's way of saying thank you for a great season by this years helpers. Now, the kennel gets into its wined down mode for the Summer and to prepare for next Fall to start the training routine all over again. Just a reminder there is still an opening for a Handler/Trainee for next season. Now it is time for me to be with just myself, my canine family and the forest. Until next week...... The above series of photos shows the "L" litter from puppies to 1 year old Sled Dogs!
Amazing how quickly they mature! All of this litter have turned out to be outstanding Sled Dogs like their parents Indigo and Blue! Another weird week here with weather. Rain Tuesday, Mild temperatures all day Wednesday with rain, wet snow and high winds causing whiteouts in the afternoon into the evening resulting in six inches of new snow and -30's Friday night into Saturday morning. Due to the extreem cold, we had a couple of house guests (Roxy & Venus) as they don't have long enough fur to protect them from those types of temperatures. We were able to get in three days of quality running this week getting all 26 dogs run on two teams. The best time of the day is when we are running the dogs! It never gets boring! Until next week........ It was another crazy week here weather wise!
After last Saturday's lightning/thunder storms, the temperature dropped leaving the trails very icy. It took a lot of grooming to prepare the trail to be safe enough to run on Tuesday. The video above is from Tuesdays run with all the dogs bootied. This was the first run after an eleven day layoff. The dogs did great and very enthusiastic. However, due to the long layoff, we kept the speed down to prevent injuries. Wednesday, rain all day that turned into snow overnight and into Thursday morning. A big surprise to wake up to 8 inches of new snow. More grooming to prepare the trails. A good run on Friday, again with both teams. All dogs are running good. Now, the temperatures are in the -20's with wind bring the windchill to the -30's. But, it is nice an sunny! Until next week....... |
