"A GLOOMY WEEK HERE IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  Yes, it was a sad/gloomy week here at Miortuk. We, here at Miortuk, are mourning the passing of Aurora. At 15 years old, age caught up to her and was the cause of her passing. In the "Reflections Section", we celebrate her long, full life here. She will be sorely missed by me and her kennel mates! "VISITORS DROPPING IN OUT OF THE BLUE IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  Neighbours across the lake had visitors arrive by float plane. It was an interesting occurrence. It was a week of mixed weather with a lot of damp/rainy days & nights. Today, the temperature rose to 30C with medium humidity. This type of weather is to continue through next week. Soon, the cooler weather will be here and the Fall Training will begin. The dogs are all doing great and they are starting to anticipate the start of training. It is amazing how they know! Depending on the temperature in the morning, I will probably start conditioning the adults and when Kara arrives, we will introduce the yearlings to the adult team. " STORMY WEATHER THIS WEEK IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  But, even with stormy weather there were some beautiful sunsets. It was a wet week here with rain most of the week. It was really great to have the kennel redone as the dogs were all high & dry. It was also a week to continue getting prepared for the upcoming running season. On Wednesday, I went to Joliette to get measured for a new leg brace to prevent further knee injury. I also picked up my new racing sled & bag from Mush Hi Tec. Thanks to Carole & Daniel for having everything ready for my visit. It was also a week for receiving some visitors that I haven't seen for quite sometime. The dogs are all settling in to their new surroundings and some are making some excavations (holes) to make it more like home. In order to keep the kennel level, I have to keep filling in their works of art. This week, I also updated the Puppies Page with some photos of Leo, Amarook, Coyute, Nanook, Lightning, Thunder, Stormy & Sky when they were puppies. Until next week....... Post Title. 08/15/2010
"CHANGES AT MIORTUK IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  This week, there were a few big changes taking place here at Miortuk. First, Denis Tremblay (a friend & fellow musher) instaled a new septic system here.This was a big job and it turned out great. Denis is also starting prepatation to compete in the 1000 mile Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race. If you would like to follow Denis on his adventure, please go to my " links" section to visit his web site at Chenil Makamic. After competing the septic installation, we completely reworked the kennel to give it a fresh new look. The dogs are really enjoying their new digs! At this time of year, thoughts go to planning for the upcoming running season. At the same time, I also reflect on dogs and adventures of the past. " SOON, IT WILL BE TIME TO START TRAINING IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  It is hard to believe with all the hot/humid weather now, but in a little over a month the conditioning/training will start for another season. It is always exciting thinking about the upcoming running season especially this year with the young dogs. This will be the first full season of running the Yearlings and it promises to be a lot of fun. We had some rain this week, some being hard driving rain storms. These storms did bring some temporary relief from the heat & humidity. However, the uncomfortable temperatures returned at weeks end. "RED SKY AT NIGHT IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  An old English sailors poem: " RED SKY AT NIGHT, SAILORS DELITE. RED SKY IN THE MORNING , SAILOR TAKE WARNING!" This saying held true, as the next day was beautiful. It was a week with mixed weather, hot/humid at the beginning, mid week - stormy then cool and finishing the week warm/humid weather returning. The storm on Wednesday night came with strong winds and then hard driving rain as the cold front passed here. The dogs were not impressed with the storm and stayed either in or under their houses to ride it out. They did enjoy the cooler temperatures afterwards. "SUNRISE IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  A beautiful golden sunrise ushers in another great day here at Miortuk. It was a wonderful week here with some nice warm weather and some much needed rain. It was also a nice week with visits to some friends and time spent on the lake with friends on Saturday. I was also able to finally get out kayaking with the break in the heat & humidity. It was a beautiful trip visiting some my favorite retreats in a couple of peaceful bays just quietly drifting and enjoying the nature! The dogs continue to relax enjoying the Summer. " HOT, HUMID WEATHER CONTINUES IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  Hot/humid weather continued this week along with some much needed rain. The photo is tonights sunset and is indicitive of some of the beautiful sunsets witnessed this week. The dogs continued to relax in the heat and became a little more active at night fall when the temperatures cooled down. This is a time for relaxation, as soon the Fall training/conditioning will begin and another running season will be here. This is so far the warmest Summer on record here and in many parts of the World. Is this an example of global warming? THINK COOL!! Until next week...... Post Title. 07/11/2010
"EXTREME TEMPERATURES HIT THE NORTHERN FOREST!!"  Here I am thinking cool, but that sure wasn't the case here this week! Extremely hot weather with temperatures in the 30C range and with high humidity made the humidex readings in the low to mid 40C area. Luckily the kennel area is in shade for the best part of the day being surrounded by the forest. Also, additional shade is provided by their dog houses that they can get under. The dogs are smart enough not to expend much energy and lay quietly in the shade. It is very important to ensure they keep well hydrated with these extreme conditions. I also had to go for the monthly supply of frozen meat for the dogs on Tuesday, leaving here at 6am and returning here around 11am. The quick trip in the early part of the day that ensured the meat stayed frozen until placed in the freezers here. We had a heavy rain here on Friday that helped relieve the high temperatures but did nothing for the humidity. STAY COOL! THINK WINTER! Until next week....... Post Title. 07/04/2010
" I AM BACK! BACK TO THE BEAUTY & TRANQUILLITY OF THE NORTHERN FOREST!"  After spending a week away visiting family in Ontario, it felt great to return to the rhythm of life in the forest! I had a real good time visiting with my Mother & family after a three year hyannis. My mother at the age of 94 is remarkable! Her memory is perfect and though she cant get around as before, she is still quite capable of getting around with assistance of a walker. I don't know what it is when I leave the forest. But, the last time we had a major snow storm here in mid March. This time an earthquake near Ottawa and its presence was felt in Ontario, Quebec and eastern USA. HUM! Is there a message here? All was well here and a friend of mine took good care of the dogs and the kennel. Good friends are greatly appreciated! Happy 4th of July to all my American Visitors. Until next week....... |
