"STILL NO SNOW HERE IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!" ![]() The photo, taken this week, shows a heavy frost one morning and that was as close as we got too snow! However, it is snowing now as I write this blog and the forecast, from Environment Canada, is for some snow every day this week. I hope they are correct. The weather kept us running short miles; however, we finished the week with only one stop runs. The dogs did great! We were able to get in 4 days of training as compared to the 3 day training week experienced over the last two weeks. The dogs showed an enthusiastic attitude each run including the training on the third day in a row. The puppies are really growing and getting more hyper with the change to the higher performance food. You can see them being watered this morning on a new post on YouTube. Until next week...... "WINTER VISITORS ARE BACK IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!" ![]() The Grey Jays are back looking for food snacks at the chalet. They return in the late Fall and stay until the Spring enjoying hand outs. They are not afraid of humans and in time will come and take food from your hand. A couple of Winters ago, I had forgotten to put out their food in the morning so one of the jays came to the sliding glass door and tapped on the glass to remind me. Last week was another week of mixed weather. Again warm during the day and below freezing at night. Thursday night and Friday, we had rain. Snow is in the forecast for the end of this coming week. I hope the forecast is correct. This crazy weather again caused problems scheduling training runs. Due to the hard trail, we continued with 4.5 mile runs. The good news is the dogs are really hyped and enjoying the quick paced training. They will be ready for longer runs when the snow finally comes. Until next week...... Post Title. 11/15/2009
"BEAUTIFUL SPRING LIKE WEATHER IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!" ![]() Yes, the weather has been more Spring like rather than the normal weather for November. These unseasonably warm days and below freezing nights is great if your not a Dog Musher! The above photo shows ice forming on the lake despite the warm temperatures during the day. The challenges facing the training program is that below freezing temperatures over night cause the ground to freeze making it unsuitable for running the dogs early in the morning when the temperatures are cooler. The frozen trails are too hard and can cause the possibility of shoulder injuries for the dogs. We were able to get in 3 runs last week later in the day when the frost was out of the ground and thus softening the trail. The warm temperatures caused a reschedule of the training and reverting to back to 4.5 mile runs. In order to make a positive of the schedule changes, the training intervals were changed to 4 minute runs and 1 minute rest. The dogs are in great spirits and showing high attitude despite the changes. Currently (11 pm ), the temperature is 8C and very humid and the next week weather is forecasting more unseasonable temperatures. Patiently, we await colder temperatures and some needed snow. Until next week........ Post Title. 11/08/2009
"A BEAUTIFUL NEW MOON AT DUSK IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!" ![]() This photo captures a beautiful new moon rising over the lake this week. It was a real strange week of weather again this week with some below freezing temperatures at night and unseasonably warm temperatures during the day. These temperatures are great if your not running Sled dogs. Despite the weather, we were able to get in 5 days of training. The trails are hard and frozen early in the morning prompting the training taking place later than usual in the mornings. We really could use 5" to 6" of packed snow on the trails. This weekend, the temperatures were more reminiscent of summer than autumn. Until next week....... Post Title. 11/01/2009
" A BEAUTIFUL MORNING SCENE TO START THE DAY IN THE NORTHERN FOREST!" ![]() What a beautiful scene to start the day and the month of November. Today was a fitting end to a very unsettled week with the weather. We had a lot of rain this week totally eliminating any traces of snow from the previous week. Today, we had rain, snow flurries, overcast skies and sunshine. Before training could take place this morning, we had to go out and clear the trail of fallen trees as a result of high winds yesterday. Even, with all the poor weather, we were able to get in 3 days training runs. The dogs continue to improve their conditioning and have now proceeded to 4 minute run/2 minute rest intervals. They are showing no fatigue after training on either a fast 4.5 mile run and a slower 8 mile run. Hopefully, the coming weeks weather will allow us to get in a normal training week. There are a couple of new postings on YouTube. Until next week....... |
