BEAUTIFUL WEEK ! 05/25/2009

As you can see here from the photo of a sunset here at Miortuk, nature can paint a beautiful canvass. The sunsets here can be spectacular and I will bring you photos of some of the best as the year progresses.

It was also a great week weather wise with some nice warm, sunny days. However, with the return of the warm Spring days, the biting Black Flies return and are hungry for blood. They will be around here until early July. The good news is the nesting Swallows love to eat them. The impact of their presence here last week was minimized due to the windy conditions.

The birth of Cannelles puppies was the high light of the week and they are growing quickly. Cannelle is very busy with the feeding.

Until next week.....

" THE SMALLEST OF THE MIGRATORY BIRDS HAVE RETURNED TO THE NORTHERN FOREST!"
Yes, the Hummingbirds arrived here last week. The forest is now a very exciting place to be if you enjoy watching birds. This morning, while exercising on my stationary bike on my deck overlooking the lake, I was entertained by the Swallows gliding, swooping and diving as they gathered flies to feed their young. Later today, I watched a group of 6 American Eagles gliding through the sky looking for prey on the ground. From the smallest to the biggest, they are all back for the Summer.
The kennel dwellers are getting adjusted to the return of the cottagers for the Summer, new noises, smells and action.
Cannelle was moved to the whelping pen to await the birth of her puppies.
Until next week......

EARLY MORNING BLISS IN THE NORTHERN FOREST! Clear blue skies and a calm lake mirroring the reflection of the sky and the surrounding pines is typical of the early morning view from my chalet. This is certainly a tough way to start the day. The peace and the serenity of the forest makes for a very relaxed atmosphere and a great start to a new day.
The early morning and late days quiet has been interrupted by the sounds of large flocks of migrating Canada Geese. Their V formations glide through the sky on their journey north.
The new Spring vegetation is starting to bud and is an early preview to dense forest vegetation that will follow. The Humming Bird feeder is filled with nectar and awaiting their arrival. The evening serenade of the Loon echos across the lake breaking the nightly silence.
Natures rhythm is a beautiful thing.
The dogs are enjoying the warmer weather and relaxing while occasionally being disturbed by passing vehicles. Cannelle is getting quite large and there is now no doubt that she will be having puppies soon. She is very sappy now and looks forward to her daily attention from me.
Until next week.......

" HOW QUICKLY THINGS CAN CHANGE IN THE NORTHERN FOREST! "
Last Monday morning, we were still showing the ice on the lake. By 4pm on the same day, all the ice was gone!
Last week was a dichotomy of weather changes with very warm temperatures, cool nights, some rain and on Saturday some snow flurries.
All of Natures signs of Spring are happening with the return of the Osprey, the Purple Martins are again nesting the bird house on my garage and on Sunday the first large flock of Canada Geese flew over heading north. The nights are filled with the sounds of the Spring breeding season with the frogs nightly croaking and also the mournful cry of the Loons searching for a breeding partner.
In the kennel life is quiet and the Spring clean up continues. Cannelle is getting bigger, I hope it is a sign that she will be having puppies this month and not just gaining weight from the extra food I am feeding her. If all goes to plan, she should have the pups around the end of the month.
Until next week.....
